About
Hamer Hills Farm
The
Early Days
Somewhere between the extinct communities of Mayfield and Rural,
Mississippi, a family farm survives, giving purpose and meaning
to the family of porcelain sculptress Penny Sanford. Penny is the
sixth generation of the Hamer family to live and work on Hamer Hills
Farm in the north-central part of Mississippi, a farm Penny's great-great-great
grandfather established in 1837. Click

Preservation
and Inspiration
Penny and her family have a number of restoration projects in progress
on Hamer Hills Farm. When the farm celebrated its 160th birthday,
the family planted 160 hardwood trees, species indigenous to the
area, but not prominent on the farm. To honor the 125th birthday
of the family's 1870 farmhouse, Penny and her family planted 125
flowering trees, including dogwood, magnolia, and redbud. Now the
family is restoring orchards and rescuing antique roses from the
various house sites on the farm. Click

Today
at Hamer Hills Farm
As family owned farms disappear across the landscape of America,
the role of the family farm changes. In 1996, Hamer Hills Farm was
designated an Historic Centennial Farm in Mississippi, a distinction
reserved for family farms that have continued as working farms for
a minimum of 100 years. Today Hamer Hills Farm is in its 162nd year
as a working farm, producing row crops of cotton and corn. Timber
is a vital part of the farm's economy, but the timber tracts are
carefully managed to encourage diversity in the wildlife. Click

Registered
English Shepherds
For four generations, Penny's family has owned and occasionally
raised Registered English Shepherds. An established breed of working
dog, the six Reg. English Shepherds that now live with Penny and
her family hold the rank of companion and guard dogs. A breed known
for their gentleness and for their unquestioned loyalty, these four-legged
members of the family are an integral part of Hamer Hills Farm.
